TRMTC staff has analyzed impacts of radioactive materials transportation on tribal lands in the lower 48 states of the United States.
The mapping exercise captured current and potential shipping routes, both by highway and rail, for radioactive materials that cross tribal lands and are shipped by the U.S. Department of Energy, licensees of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the U.S. Navy. It also lists which tribes are within a 10- and 50-mile radius of either a nuclear power plant, a university research reactor, a DOE facility that handles or stores radioactive materials, or private industry storage or disposal sites - both proposed and existing sites.
