Strategic Initiatives
The Tribal Radioactive Materials Transportation Committee (TRMTC) provides an avenue for member Tribal nations to speak with and influence the decisions of the Department of Energy (DOE) and other federal agencies regarding the transportation of radioactive materials across the nation. TRMTC also works with states to coordinate state and tribal planning for shipments of radioactive materials. Over many decades, a collaborative planning process has developed among the participating federal agencies, state, and Tribal governments which has helped shape decisions on topics such as route selection, notifications of shipments, inspections, fees, emergency preparedness, and staff training.
TRMTC works to ensure the collaborative planning process continues and accounts for the priorities of the tribal governments impacted by these shipments. The goal is to help Tribal nations prepare for these shipments and communicate with their tribal members about the safety measures taken, including for the protection of cultural resources.
Key Accomplishments Include:
Provide input to DOE, the Federal Railroad Administration and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) on a variety of Orders, Regulations and Planning Documents.
Engage with the NRC on items related to transportation activities and Tribal engagement through providing a Safeguards Information Awareness Training as a requirement for the Tribal Advance Notification.
Engage with State Regional Groups to increase Tribal participation in TRMTC and other DOE working groups and cooperative agreements.
